Purpose : In this study, the geometrical monocular cues were presented with the stereoscope target¡¯s background, the change in depth perception was confirmed, and an effective realization method of depth perception in virtual reality was analyzed.
Methods : The monocular cues used for the target¡¯s background were the texture gradient, the linear perspective, the aerial perspective, and the shading. The number and contrast of lines were selected for the control parameters with the texture gradient, the linear perspective, the number and contrast difference of lines were selected for the control parameters with the aerial perspective. Also, the density and range of shading were chosen for the control parameters with shading. The target was randomly presented to all subjects, and the change in depth perception was identified through a 5-points scale survey after measuring at far and near. Moreover, the efficiency was evaluated through the change in depth perception into a positive effect when the subjective¡¯s perception matched the intended one and a negative effect when it did not matched.
Results : It was confirmed that most of the monocular cue parameters were consistent with the intention. In the near, some differences were found with the control parameters. The efficiency of depth perception was found to be most effective through the number of line control with a texture gradient, and aerial perspective.
Conclusion : The subject¡¯s depth perception in the stereoscope can be finely adjusted even if the same viewing distance, through the appropriate monocular cues provided. Also, the efficiency of depth perception was found to be most effective through the number of line control with a texture gradient. In order to more accurate depth perception, a follow-up study adding a change of accommodation and vergence is necessary.
